Barbell Brawl on Barrow Street

Welcome to the HFE Barbell Brawl on Barrow St, a premier platform for novice and seasoned powerlifters to showcase their strength. 


Read below for our competition guidelines to ensure a fair, fun, and safe experience for everyone involved. 


These follow industry-standard rules with a few HFE-specific notes.

MEET RULES

 

LIFTER CONDUCT


Respect the Platform. At HFE, we lift heavy and act right. All lifters must show respect to our referees, loaders, spotters, and fellow competitors. Any unsportsmanlike behavior = disqualification. We don’t play about that.

Weigh-Ins. You’ll weigh in at your assigned time in minimal clothing. Be on time – no exceptions.

Coaches & Crew. Cheer loud, but stay in your lane. Only athletes and staff allowed on the platform.

Warm-Up Area. This isn’t your personal gym. Be courteous. Share racks and platforms so everyone gets time to prepare.

Platform Access. If your name’s not up next, step off. Lifters and authorized staff only on deck.

  • 53 kg (youth)
     
  • 59 kg
     
  • 66 kg
     
  • 74 kg
     
  • 83 kg
     
  • 93 kg
     
  • 105 kg
     
  • 120 kg
     
  • 120+ kg
     

Women:

  • 43 kg (youth)
     
  • 47 kg
     
  • 52 kg
     
  • 57 kg
     
  • 63 kg
     
  • 69 kg
     
  • 76 kg
     
  • 84 kg
     
  • 84+ kg
     

Note: We follow standard IPF-style categories, but final class structure may adjust based on sign-ups.


APPROVED GEAR

Raw Division (Classic):

  • Belt: Max width 10 cm
     
  • Wrist Wraps: Up to 1 meter
     
  • Knee Sleeves: Non-compressive neoprene only
     
  • Singlet: Required
     
  • Shirt & Shoes: T-shirt required for squat and bench; shoes must be secure and safe
     

Equipped Division (Single-Ply):

  • Support Gear: Single-ply suits, shirts, wraps (check approval list)
     
  • Knee Wraps: Up to 2 meters
     

Final call on gear approval rests with the meet director. Don’t test us.


DIVISIONS & CATEGORIES

Age Divisions:

  • Youth: 8–13
     
  • Teen: 14–19
     
  • Junior: 20–23
     
  • Open: All lifters eligible
     
  • Masters: 40+ (may be split in 5-year groups)
     

Divisions:

  • Raw (Classic)
     
  • Equipped (Single-Ply)
     

Team Divisions (Optional):

  • High School
     
  • Collegiate
     
  • Military
     
  • First Responders
     

COMPETITION FORMAT

Lift Order:

  1. Squat
     
  2. Bench Press
     
  3. Deadlift
     

Attempts:

  • 3 per lift (9 total)
     
  • Best successful attempt in each counts toward total
     

Commands:

  • Squat: “Squat” → “Rack”
     
  • Bench: “Start” → “Press” → “Rack”
     
  • Deadlift: “Down”
     

Judging:

  • 3 judges
     
  • You need 2 out of 3 white lights for a good lift
     
  • Miss all 3 attempts on any lift = bomb out
     

SCORING & AWARDS

  • Total Score: Best squat + bench + deadlift
     
  • Ties: Lighter lifter wins
     
  • Top Lifters: Podium recognition for Top 5
     
  • Relative Strength Awards: Using DOTS or similar formulas to rank lifters across weight classes
     

ADDITIONAL INFO

  • Registration: Must be completed before the event
     
  • Rules Briefing: Don’t skip it – all lifters must attend
     
  • Medical Clearance: Required for youth and masters divisions (if requested)
